Keeping Your Outdoor Garden Fountain Clean

Keeping Your Outdoor Garden Fountain Clean Proper care and regular upkeep are important to the longevity of water fountains. It is important to clean it out and remove any debris or foreign elements that might have dropped into or onto it. Another factor is that water that is subjected to sunlight is susceptible to growing algae. Blend hydrogen peroxide, sea salt, or vinegar into the water to avoid this particular issue. Bleach can also be dissolved into the water, but this is not an ideal option because it can sicken birds or other animals.

Every 3-4 months, garden fountains should undergo a serious cleaning. Before you can start cleaning it you need to drain out all of the water. Then use a soft cloth and mild cleanser to scrub the inside. Feel free to use a toothbrush if necessary for any smaller crevasses. Make sure all the soap is completely washed off.

Make sure you get rid of any calcium or plankton by taking the pump apart and cleaning the inside carefully. Letting it soak in vinegar for a couple of hours first will make it much easier to clean. Neither rain water nor mineral water contain ingredients that will build up inside the pump, so use either over tap water if possible.

One final recommendation for keeping your fountain in top working order is to check the water level every day and make sure it is full. If the water level slides below the pump’s intake level, it can hurt the pump and cause it to burn out - something you do not want to happen!
