When and Where Did Water Fountains Emerge?

When and Where Did Water Fountains Emerge? Himself a learned man, Pope Nicholas V led the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 till 1455 and was responsible for the translation of scores of ancient texts from their original Greek into Latin. It was imperative for him to beautify the city of Rome to make it worthy of being known as the capital of the Christian world. Starting in 1453, the ruined ancient Roman aqueduct known as the Aqua Vergine which had brought clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away, underwent reconstruction at the bidding of the Pope. The ancient Roman custom of building an awe-inspiring commemorative fountain at the point where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was revived by Nicholas V. At the bidding of the Pope, architect Leon Battista Alberti began the construction of a wall fountain in the spot where we now find the Trevi Fountain. Adjustments and extensions, included in the repaired aqueduct, eventually supplied the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.

Ultimately transferring to Rome to fully reveal their artwork, primarily in the form of community water fountains, Bernini’s father, a distinguished Florentine sculptor, mentored his young son. The young Bernini received encouragement from Popes and relevant artists alike, and was an exceptional employee. At the beginning he was celebrated for his sculptural expertise. He used his knowledge and melded it seamlessly with Roman marble, most notably in the Vatican. Though he was influenced by many, Michelangelo had the most profound impact on him, both personally and professionally.
Cultural Statues in Old Greece Although the majority of sculptors were remunerated by the temples to adorn the elaborate columns and archways with renderings of the gods of old, as the period came to a close, it became more common for sculptors to portray ordinary people as well mainly because many of Greeks had started to think of their religion as superstitious rather than sacred.... read more
