The Defining Characteristics of Ancient Greek Sculpture

The Defining Characteristics of Ancient Greek Sculpture The first freestanding statuary was developed by the Archaic Greeks, a distinguished accomplishment since until then the sole carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks.Defining Characteristics Ancient Greek Sculpture 258749704296.jpg The kouroi were considered by the Greeks to embody beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising stiffness to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, brawny, and nude. The kouroi became life-sized commencing in 650 BC. A significant age of transformation for the Greeks, the Archaic period brought about more forms of state, expressions of art, and a higher appreciation of people and customs outside of Greece. Similar to other moments of historical conflict, arguments were commonplace, and there were battles between city-states like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos.

Back Story of Fountains

Back Story of FountainsBack Story Fountains 86122515096616407.jpg Pope Nicholas V, himself a well educated man, governed the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of old classic Greek texts into Latin. He undertook the embellishment of Rome to turn it into the model seat of the Christian world. In 1453 the Pope commissioned the rebuilding of the Aqua Vergine, an ancient Roman aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away. The historical Roman tradition of marking the entry point of an aqueduct with an imposing celebratory fountain, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. At the behest of the Pope, architect Leon Battista Alberti began the construction of a wall fountain in the place where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The Trevi Fountain as well as the well-known baroque fountains found in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona were eventually supplied with water from the modified aqueduct he had rebuilt.

Modern Garden Decoration: Outdoor Fountains and their Beginnings

Modern Garden Decoration: Outdoor Fountains Beginnings 63276144478318652.jpg Modern Garden Decoration: Outdoor Fountains and their Beginnings The incredible architecture of a fountain allows it to provide clean water or shoot water high into air for dramatic effect and it can also serve as an excellent design feature to complement your home.

From the beginning, outdoor fountains were simply meant to serve as functional elements. Cities, towns and villages made use of nearby aqueducts or springs to provide them with drinking water as well as water where they could bathe or wash. Up until the nineteenth, fountains had to be higher and closer to a water source, such as aqueducts and reservoirs, in order to take advantage of gravity which fed the fountains. Fountains were an optimal source of water, and also served to adorn living areas and memorialize the designer. The main components used by the Romans to build their fountains were bronze or stone masks, mostly depicting animals or heroes. Muslims and Moorish garden designers of the Middle Ages included fountains to re-create smaller models of the gardens of paradise. King Louis XIV of France wanted to demonstrate his dominion over nature by including fountains in the Gardens of Versailles. The Popes of the 17th and 18th centuries were extolled with baroque style fountains constructed to mark the arrival points of Roman aqueducts.

The end of the nineteenth century saw the rise in usage of indoor plumbing to provide drinking water, so urban fountains were relegated to strictly decorative elements. The introduction of special water effects and the recycling of water were 2 things made possible by replacing gravity with mechanical pumps.

Embellishing city parks, honoring people or events and entertaining, are some of the uses of modern-day fountains.

Solar energy is a great way to run your water fountain, just know that initial expenses will most likely be higher. Terra cotta, copper, porcelain, or bronze are used to make solar powered water fountains. If you are looking for one which compliments your decor, the range available on the market makes this possible. Easy to upkeep and an excellent way to make a real contribution to the environment, they are wonderful additions to your garden sanctuary as well.

Indoor wall fountains are a superb way to cool your home as well as to provide an enticing addition to your living area. An alternative to air conditioners and swamp coolers, they cool down your home by using the same principles. You can also save on your electric costs because they use less power.

Fanning crisp, dry air across them is the most frequent way used to benefit from their cooling effect.Advantages Photovoltaic Garden Fountains 81593651.jpg Either your ceiling fan or air from a corner of the room can be used to improve flow. It is very important that the surface of the water have air continually blowing across it. Cool, crisp air is one of the natural byproducts of fountains and waterfalls. A big public fountain or a water fall will generate a sudden chilliness in the air. Your fountain cooling system should not be installed in an area which is particularly hot. Your fountain will be less reliable if you put it in the sunshine.
