Rome’s Ingenious Water Delivery Solutions

Rome’s Ingenious Water Delivery Solutions Rome’s 1st raised aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; before that, citizens residing at higher elevations had to rely on local streams for their water. If inhabitants residing at higher elevations did not have accessibility to springs or the aqueduct, they’d have to depend on the other existing systems of the time, cisterns that accumulated rainwater from the sky and subterranean wells that received the water from below ground. To furnish water to Pincian Hill in the early sixteenth century, they applied the new method of redirecting the stream from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground network. The aqueduct’s channel was made attainable by pozzi, or manholes, that were situated along its length when it was 1st built. During the roughly nine years he owned the residential property, from 1543 to 1552, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi employed these manholes to take water from the network in buckets, though they were initially built for the objective of cleaning and maintaining the aqueduct. Whilst the cardinal also had a cistern to get rainwater, it didn’t supply a sufficient amount of water. Through an orifice to the aqueduct that flowed below his property, he was in a position to reach his water needs.
